When considering lighting it is important to think how your room is going to be used, by who and at what time of day.
If you want to highlight something then choose a light to illuminate it. For example, interesting room features such as beams and archways can be highlighted with uplighters, or spotlights can be used on shelving.
Why not have your lights on different circuits so some can be switched off while leaving others on, to create a different atmosphere all together.
